Basheer Alim spent his early childhood in Lake View, South Carolina. He relocated to Syracuse, NY in the mid 1960s where he finished high school and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Syracuse University's College of Fine Art and Design in 1974. As a student, he was a cofounder of the Community Folk Art Center which is still an active part of the Syracuse University landscape. Prior to graduating, he was hired by IBM in their Field Engineering Division. During his IBM career, Basheer relocated several times and earned an MBA in Global Operations Mgmt. He also received 4 IBM Funds for Community Service grants in Syracuse NY, Atlanta Ga, and Detroit Mi. in support of the arts. He Retired in 2013 to open his private studio and to pursue his passions as an artist.
Basheer has exhibited in numerous shows and galleries across the US since the early 1970s. In 2005, 2010 and 2012, he participated in shows at the Syracuse University Community Folk Art Center, Authors and Artists events in Chicago and numerous Detroit events. He also traveled to Ghana, West Africa in 2005 and 2007 as part of an extension course through the Travel Abroad Office at NC State University in conjunction with the IBM Diversity Network. The group visited various craft villages and made contact with many West African artisans. Other sites he has traveled include, Senegal, West Africa, Morocco, North Africa, Mecca Saudi Arabia, Amersterdam, Holland, and London, England in Europe, and Seoul, South Korea
